Ethereum is the world's leading smart contract platform, enabling developers to build decentralised applications (dApps), DeFi protocols, NFT marketplaces, and more. Founded by Vitalik Buterin and launched in 2015, Ethereum introduced programmable blockchain — a global computer that executes code trustlessly.
In 2022, Ethereum completed "The Merge," transitioning from proof-of-work to proof-of-stake, reducing its energy consumption by ~99.95%. ETH holders can now stake their coins to earn yield and secure the network. Over 30 million ETH are currently staked.
The EIP-1559 upgrade introduced a fee-burning mechanism, making ETH deflationary during periods of high network activity. Ethereum hosts the majority of DeFi TVL, the largest NFT ecosystem, and the most active developer community in crypto.
Spot Ethereum ETFs were approved in the US in May 2024, opening institutional access. Ethereum's roadmap includes continued scaling improvements through Layer 2 networks (Arbitrum, Optimism, Base) and future sharding upgrades.
