Polkadot is a next-generation blockchain protocol enabling different blockchains to transfer messages and value in a trust-free fashion, sharing security through its relay chain. Founded by Ethereum co-founder Gavin Wood in 2016, Polkadot aims to create a fully decentralised internet (Web3).
Polkadot's parachain architecture allows specialised blockchains to plug into its shared security model, solving the blockchain trilemma of scalability, security and decentralisation. Parachains like Acala (DeFi), Moonbeam (EVM compatibility) and Astar extend Polkadot's capabilities.
The JAM (Join-Accumulate Machine) upgrade announced in 2024 represents a major architectural evolution, enabling Polkadot to become a more generalised supercomputer platform beyond parachain hosting.
