Cardano is a proof-of-stake blockchain platform built on peer-reviewed academic research and formal verification. Founded by Charles Hoskinson (Ethereum co-founder) and developed by IOHK, Cardano launched in 2017 with a phased development roadmap (Byron, Shelley, Goguen, Basho, Voltaire).
Cardano's Ouroboros is the first provably secure proof-of-stake protocol. The platform uses a two-layer architecture separating the settlement layer (ADA transactions) from the computation layer (smart contracts), enabling greater flexibility and upgradability.
After years of development, Cardano now supports smart contracts, DeFi, NFTs and its own stablecoin ecosystem. The Chang upgrade in 2024 introduced on-chain governance, giving ADA holders direct voting power over protocol changes — a major step toward full decentralisation.
